Thailand Visa: 21 Passports Need One From 15 Sept
The 60-to-30-day story is not the whole story. Twenty-one nationalities drop off visa-free entry entirely on 15 September. If that is your passport, a stamp at the airport is no longer the plan.
Ministry of Interior notifications published in the Royal Gazette on 31 August take effect on 15 September 2026. The Tourism Authority of Thailand published the 30-day, 15-day and Visa-on-Arrival lists on 1 September. The Department of Consular Affairs confirmed the switch on 3 September. Arrivals on or before 14 September keep the stamp they receive. After midnight that night, 21 nationalities that are on neither list need a visa before they fly.
Bangkok — Most coverage of the new Thailand visa framework stops at the 30-day cut. That is the right headline if you hold a US, UK, EU, Australian, Indian or Gulf passport. It is the wrong headline if you hold one of the 21 passports that sat on the old 93-country exemption and do not appear on the new 60-country tourism list, the two-country 15-day list, or the three-country Visa-on-Arrival list.
Those travellers do not get a shorter stamp. They get no stamp at all unless a visa is issued first. Airlines check before boarding. Immigration checks again. Showing up “like last year” is how people buy a ticket home the same day.
The 21 passports that lose visa-free entry
The 21 are the residue of the July 2024 expansion. They were added when Thailand wanted volume and removed when the Cabinet adopted a “one country, one privilege” rule. They are not named in a punishment order. They simply did not make the new lists.
Albania, Andorra, Colombia, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Jamaica, Kosovo, Mexico, Monaco, Morocco, Panama, Papua New Guinea, San Marino, Sri Lanka, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay, Uzbekistan.
If your passport is on that list, the Thai visa requirement for tourism starts with the e-Visa portal, not with the arrival hall. Do not confuse this group with countries that keep a separate bilateral waiver — China, Russia, Vietnam, Laos, Mongolia and several others stay on their own clocks. Mauritius and Seychelles drop to 15 days visa-free, which is still visa-free. Azerbaijan, Belarus and Serbia keep Visa on Arrival. Mexico, Colombia and Sri Lanka do not.
If your passport is not on the TAT 30-day list, the 15-day list, the VOA list, or a named bilateral treaty, assume you need a visa. Guessing at the counter is not a strategy.
Thai visa requirement: what to apply for
For a holiday, the ordinary product is a single-entry Tourist (TR) visa. Thai missions and the e-Visa portal typically issue it with three months’ validity from the issue date and 60 days of stay from the entry date. One 30-day extension at an immigration office, currently 1,900 baht, can take that to 90 days. Leave Thailand and the single-entry visa is spent. You apply again.
People who bounce between Bangkok expat life and a home country every few months usually need the Multiple-Entry Tourist Visa. The METV is commonly six months and 60 days per entry, with the same extension option. It is still tourism only.
Apply only at thaievisa.go.th. Third-party sites that charge to “submit your Thailand visa” are reselling a free government form. Processing times vary by mission. Do not buy a ticket for 16 September and file the application on the 12th.

You cannot fix this at the land border
The two-entry-per-year cap on visa-exempt land crossings is irrelevant if you are no longer visa-exempt. A bus to Nong Khai will not mint a privilege the Gazette took away.
Living in Thailand on the old stamp is not a plan
If you are already inside the country on a 60-day exemption granted on or before 14 September, that stay is not cut short. The next entry is the problem. A Bangkok expat who flies home in October and tries to walk back in on the same Mexican, Colombian or Sri Lankan passport will need a visa for that return. The same is true for a Phuket digital nomad who treats the island as a seasonal base.
Renting in Thailand gets harder on a 30- or 60-day tourist clock. Landlords in Bangkok and Phuket increasingly want a visa that outlasts the lease. Thailand healthcare for foreigners remains good if you can pay; a tourist visa does not create a local insurance market for you. Those are cost-of-living in Thailand issues that sit on top of the visa fee, not instead of it.
Moving to Thailand means picking a long-stay product
A Tourist visa buys a holiday. It does not buy a year. If the point of the trip is remote work, retirement or a real move, compare the DTV, a Thailand retirement visa, an LTR category, or Thailand Privilege against your age, savings and income source. The DTV is the usual remote-work answer: five years, 180 days per entry, one 180-day extension, foreign employers only. Apply from the mission that covers your citizenship or legal residence — third-country trips to Vientiane are closed for that product. The retirement route still wants age 50 and a bank balance or pension letter that survives a retrospective check. Neither is cheaper than a free stamp. Both beat a year of refused entries.

The honest move, if you hold one of the 21 passports, is to treat 15 September as a filing deadline rather than an argument on arrival.
